7 July - to Skaftafell...facing the huge gletsjer Vatnajökull
7 juli 2016 - Reykjavík, IJsland
I arrived on July 5th in Skaftafell, a Natural park down the Vatnajökull. The 60 km from Jökulsarlon to Skaftafell went well. For once I got the wind in the back for at least 45 km. We reached a mean speed of 23km...what a diffence with the day before.
campsite Skaftafell
Skaftafell is a Natural Marc in the south of the Vatnajökull. The magnificant and largest gletsjer of Iceland. We found a place at the campsite and just 10 minutes after the tents were set up, it started to rain. As the wind comes from the gletsjer, it feels rather cold. But I m well equiped with a good sleeping bag and matras.
Anyhow, the day after, I decided to take a bus direction Reykjavik...in order to see more of Iceland. The average speed I get with the bike is far too slow to get back in time. As I will leave a week earlier than originally planned, I need to speed up some plans and decisions. The adventure itself is OK, I could bare the weather conditions for a time, but getting on the road alone, be confronted with yourself is by far the most difficult. A situation I underestimated. But the support of social media helpen me through it. The support of my wife, daughters , friends and family were very welcome:-)
Back to the adventure. The way from Skaftafell to Reykjavik took me over Vik, the most southern city of Iceland, the Eyjafjallajökull (eruption in 2010), the Skogafoss and Seljalandfoss waterfalls , and the town of Sellfoss. A bus trip of 5 h. But very worthy!
I'm staying now at the Reykjavik campsite, a great campsite not far from the centre, I discovered today the city by bike, did a washing session of t-shirts and other stuff, went to the tourists information for more info on the buspossibilities to the North of Iceland. There is a connection to Akureyri, going through the highlands of Iceland, which I need to take on Saturday.
Goeie reis verder
