10 Juli. F35 bustrip from Reykjavik in the South, to Akureyri in the North: 460 km
10 juli 2016 - Akureyri, IJsland
I took the special mountain bus, a 4 wheel drive Scania, from Reykiavik over the F35 through the Iceland inner land. A non-asphalt road, only intended for 4 wheel drive cars and special bikes. The weather was challenging, meaning lots of wind in the face, rain and rather cold. No sunshine. The landscapes are spectacular on that road, passing in between the 2 gletsjers: the Langjökul in the West, the Hofsjökul in the East. Places as Geysir (that's where the name comes from),
the huge Gullfoss waterfall,
the hotsprings in the "lonely spot" Hveravellir...
Even the fact I originally considered to bike this road back to the North, I'm glad not have done it. The conditions were really bad to drive the bike on this 240km road. Some courageous people tried...but our bus needed to take in 4 of them . They were all cold and exhausted.
The total trip took about 9 hours, passing through the innerland with its marvelous views. I arrived in the city of Akureyri, the second city of Iceland, and set up my tent in a small local campsite. . Had great food and dessert in a fancy restaurant, and a real Stella Artois. !
The next day, I did a boat trip in the largest fjord of Iceland in order to see some whales. I saw 5 humpback whales, but they didn' t do these acrobatic jumps...they are feeding themselves in order to get through the next winter . Akureyri itself is very small, with a "High street" of 105 meters long...., but it has a great Hospital, a botanic graden, a great harbor, and multiple little musea. I'll stay here for 2 days, getting a next trip direction Seydisfjordour, the harbor of Smyril lines...direction Home. First the final Football France vs Portugal tonight! I found a pub down town, "the backpacker", showing the game on a big screen....
